American Alchemy, 2015

I appropriate and/or commission images that deal with biology and representation, ecology, and national icons. Most of the pictures I produce use two and sometimes three negatives.  I use a multi-negative alternative photographic process called “Photo Alchemy,” developed by the late master b/w printer Ivan Dalla Tana. It combines traditional Black and White darkroom processes with chemical manipulations of silver-based photo materials that turn the silver salts of fiber-base paper into gold and other colors — producing works that shimmer with unexpected tones and textures.
